Contributor Session

Discover contributing

WordCamp Dublin is providing a number of ways to help people contribute to the WordPress project. Come along and get involved, it’s fun, social and a great way to achieve amazing things by working together.

Talks and workshops on the main conference agenda will continue after the Contributor Session on the Sunday through to about 5:15pm.

More about contributing to Make WordPress at Dublin

What will I be able to do at Dublin’s event?

With two days of the conference 19-20 October 2019, a third for Contributor Day was not possible in terms of budget or volunteer resources. But, by copying what has worked for shorter contributor sessions at other WordCamps and Meetups, there will be a number of ways you can start or continue your contributing journey at Dublin.

How you can contribute

There will be:

  • opportunities to help get started, work on your own contributing tasks or work with other attendees on a specific area. We are working with the university on having a room for WordPress support and contributing on the Saturday and Sunday of the event
  • a dedicated contributor session and workshop on livestreaming on Sunday morning, approximately between 9am/9.15am and 11am. We hope to have help available for using the new block editor – let us know if you can help support others in this area
  • specific tasks will be available for people to work on either just on the day or continue working on after the event. These are being put together with the various Make WordPress teams and volunteers who have come forward. If you would like to help or suggest a task from your team, email dublin@wordcamp.org and include ‘contributing’ in the subject.

We will have tasks to join for a number of teams including community, marketing, WordPress.tv and more. There will be help for those starting out on their contributing journey and those wanting to explore new teams, such as, theme review.

If you can help or are new to contributing, please team as soon as possible on dublin@wordcamp.org – please put ‘Contributor session’ in the subject. This will help us arrange any support needed and help you get involved in the WordPress project.

How attendees benefitted from previous contributor events

We will be building on the success of contributor sessions at other camps. At Belfast in 2018, a number of hour-long contributing drop-ins were run within the conference programme in addition to the half day contributor session. These proved to be very popular and saw attendees helping others get started with the tools, such as Slack and Trello, chatting about the ways they contribute, working on joint ideas, and generally encouraging each other to contribute to WordPress.

In Dublin in 2017, the WordPress support room featured contributing opportunities, and attendees participated in tasks in the areas of community, design, marketing and WordPress.tv throughout the weekend.

Friday workshops at DCU

As part of our contribution to growing the awareness and understanding of WordPress, a series of workshops are being provided to introduce it to students at DCU, working alongside the university. These will take place on Friday 18 October and there will be limited places also available for those new to WordPress. [Workshops are currently oversubscribed].

The workshops will focus on an introduction to WordPress, e-commerce, SEO and opportunities to contribute within the open source community. Thanks to everyone involved in putting these together and to Yoast Academy for agreeing to provide workshops at the event as a whole.
